Ningen are mysterious creatures from the arctic considered to be cryptids. The ningen were first sighted by Japanese vessels in the oceans around Antarctica and thus named by them. “Ningen” means “human” in Japanese. These creatures were likely named this due to how researchers described them as “human-like”, but massive and solid white in color. According to reports, they were at first speculated to be little more than submarines within the water. The research vessels would attempt to catch up to them to see if they could determine who they belonged to. However, after getting closer, they found it to be a living and breathing animal. Before receiving a full glimpse of it, the ningen would return back into the depths.
Based on rumors spread through the general public, the Japanese vessels sighting the beasts had photo and video evidence of them but cultural pressure or government secrecy forced the men to keep the footage from leaking. Still, there are some believed sightings of these creatures outside of the research submarines.
The first official photo of a ningen was published in the 2007 article of a Japanese paranormal magazine. Titled “Antarctic Humans”, the article showcased a Google Maps photo of the creature off the coast of Namibia.
The sightings of these creatures are seemingly rare for two reasons. The first relies on its location to successfully conceal itself. Antarctica is expensive to travel to, and most would rather not go in general regardless of whether it be to capture evidence of the creatures. The second reason associates the ningen with the Japanese government. It is believed that Japan has been monitoring internet media, thus removing any video or photo evidence of the creatures online. No genuine reason is given as to why that is, unfortunately.
Reports of the ningen vary, but all describe the same solid white color. Some depictions of the ningen show it with only a head and two legs, while others give it a full body and long tail akin to that of a mermaid. The ningen’s size is also up for debate. Abiding by the original myth of it being mistaken for a submarine, it can be assumed that the ningen is on average around 60-90 feet long. In most instances, the ningen only possess a mouth and eyes, which are typically solid black in color.
Unfortunately, not much is known about the nature of the creatures. They are never truly depicted as hostile, but it is up for debate whether they are territorial. People online think that photos of the ningen online are purposefully highly unrealistic to cover up genuine evidence of the beasts, but others speculate that the creature is little more than a fairy tale. The biggest conspiracy surrounding the ningen is the idea of the Japanese government prohibiting distribution of solid evidence around the ningen.
While we don’t know for certain whether the ningen is real or fake, we do know that the ocean depths are filled with surprises and scientists make discoveries surrounding it constantly. It may be unlikely that a giant whale-mermaid lives below the waves, but it does make us wonder what does.
